Awash

I first wove on my mother’s loom as a child. Decades later, in my fifties, I returned to the practice of weaving as I was questioning how to proceed as a dancer and choreographer. What I discovered was not a departure from dance but a continuation in another form; a new way of holding questions I had spent years exploring through composition and improvisation.

The resulting artworks hold space the way a body does; they are arrangements the viewer can approach, move around, and engage with.

I source my materials from Japan: fibers at once lightweight and structurally strong, allowing me to work at an increasingly ambitious scale. My process is not linear, nor pre-determined. When I begin I do not decide which edge is top or bottom. Materials are added and some are removed. Small gestures emerge. I come and go from sections. Time spent stepping away to consider the composition is vital to next actions and reaching a conclusion.

Awash is a record of those movements: thread crossing thread, structure emerging through repetition and disruption; the asymmetries and impulses of my body translated into material.
