SCULPTURE

beginning at Penland in 2022
What began as an uplanned pivot has become a field of study and experimentation that pushes me to my limits. I started working with steel at Penland School of Craft the summer of 2022, after the weaving workshop I had registered for cancelled. My options were to request a refund or find another workshop with room. I found myself in the Iron Studio with Andrew Hayes as our teacher. I admit that I had more than one moment of standing in the workshop with a piece of steel in my hand, wondering wtf I, at age 53, had gotten myself into. These first 4 images are a taste of the result of my time there. Steel loom forms.
NEXT: Summer of 2023 Sculpture workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center with Carl Reed. It was time to learn more about design and gain skills with new tools (plasma cutting). Dance is my primary language, and so I began to form spaces for dance. Dance Parks - akin to Skate Parks.
Upon returning home, I continue to question how to work with such seemingly disparate materials. Steel: hard, sharp and heavy. Fibers: delicate, soft and light. I am the common denominator. And I am curious about balance, tension and movement. To the extent that I can, I use my body as my primary tool. I explore what I am physically capable of at this moment in my life. I do know that it is time for me to add more heat to the matter. Hot metal bends more easily. This is on the horizon.
